Removable appliances have wire springs which are attached to a smooth, plastic plate. It’s held securely in the mouth by wire clasps and encourages simple tooth movements. They are usually used instead of braces for young children who still have some baby teeth.
Functional appliances, like the Herbst appliance, help correct how the upper and lower jaws fit together. They are used as the first stage of treatment prior to braces and are a solution for both growing children and teens.
Maxillary expansion appliances are used to widen the top jaw. This helps both sets of teeth fit together more seamlessly. We use these more in child treatments but they can also be successful in our adult patients.
Temporary Anchorage Devices, or TADs, are miniature screws or plates placed in the jaw bone. They act as anchor points during orthodontic treatment and are generally reserved for more severe misalignments. In some cases, TADs reduce or eliminate the need for jaw surgery.
We rarely use traditional headgear. However, reverse-pull headgear can be an effective way to encourage forward growth of the upper jaw in under-bite cases. If we do recommend headgear, you’ll often only need to wear it at night.
